Ddhaw Ghro Habitat Protection Area

The Ddhaw Ghro Habitat Protection Area is an environmentally and culturally rich area located between the Pelly and Stewart Rivers.

The Final Agreements for both First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun and Selkirk First Nation established the sanctuary as a Special Management Area. The Selkirk First Nation, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, and Yukon government have signed off on a joint management plan to protect this important area.

The Ddhaw Ghro habitat protection area is named for the ‘many peaks’ of the McArthur Mountains.

The area became the McArthur Game Sanctuary in 1948 to protect a small, isolated population of dark-coloured Fannin’s sheep and cultural and spiritual values of the area.

The joint management of habitat protection areas and parks is a key aspect of the Final Agreements.

The Final Agreements establish a number of Special Management Areas and outline how they will be jointly managed by the Government of Yukon, Canada and First Nations.

Special Management Areas can be protected through different laws depending on what needs safeguarding. The Yukon and National Parks Acts, Yukon and Canadian Wildlife Acts, and Yukon’s Heritage Resources Act are all laws that can be used to protect these areas.
